WHAT PTE SCORE DO I NEED FOR AUSTRALIAN PERMANENT RESIDENCY (PR) ?

What PTE score do I need for Australian permanent residency?

The PTE score you need for Australian permanent residency depends on the visa subclass you are applying for.

The first step is to check your visa number, for example subclass 189, 190, 491, partner visa or employer sponsored visa. Each visa has its own English language rules, and the required score can change depending on the pathway.

Once you know your visa subclass, check the official Department of Home Affairs website to confirm the English requirement for that visa. Some visas only require you to meet a minimum English level. Other visas, such as skilled visas, use English as part of the points system.

For points-tested visas such as subclass 189, 190 and 491, a higher PTE score can improve your migration points. Competent English generally meets the minimum English requirement but gives 0 points. Proficient English gives 10 points, while Superior English gives 20 points.

This means the right PTE score depends on your situation. If you only need to meet a visa requirement, Competent English may be enough. If you are applying for a points-tested visa and need a stronger Expression of Interest score, aiming for Superior English may make a meaningful difference.

Step 1: check your visa subclass

Before choosing a PTE target score, confirm which visa subclass you are applying for. This matters because Australian permanent residency pathways are not all assessed the same way.

Visa pathway

Why your PTE score matters

Skilled Independent visa subclass 189

This is a points-tested visa. Higher English can increase your total migration points.

Skilled Nominated visa subclass 190

This is a points-tested visa. Higher English can increase your total migration points and may improve your competitiveness.

Skilled Work Regional visa subclass 491

This is a points-tested visa. Higher English can increase your total migration points.

Employer sponsored PR pathways

English may be a minimum requirement, depending on the visa subclass and stream.

Partner visa pathways

English is generally not assessed in the same way as skilled points-tested visas.

Step 2: check the Department of Home Affairs requirement

After confirming your visa subclass, check the Department of Home Affairs website for the English requirement that applies to your visa.

You need to confirm:

  1. The English level required for your visa
  2. Whether your visa is points-tested
  3. Whether your test result is still valid
  4. Whether the old or updated PTE score rules apply to your test date

This is important because from 7 August 2025, PTE Academic score requirements changed for Australian visa purposes.

What PTE score should I aim for?

If your visa only requires a minimum English level, your goal is to meet that requirement safely.

If your visa is points-tested, your goal may be different. In that case, English is not just a requirement. It can affect your total migration points.

Superior English

For many students with a reasonable English foundation, Proficient English is an achievable target. With the right PTE preparation from an established PTE centre like us who can provide clear strategies and targeted feedback, students can often improve their score more efficiently than by studying alone.
