How to Book the PTE Test in Sydney: Fees, Steps and Rules (2026)

By Sydney PTE Academy, teaching PTE in Sydney since 2015 · Updated 17 October 2026

Short answer: you book PTE Academic online through Pearson, pick a test centre and a time, and pay the fee, which is around $490 in Australia. Sydney has several test centres, but popular dates still fill up, so book as soon as you know when you want to sit. Most results arrive within 2 business days.

This guide walks through every step, the rules on rescheduling and refunds, and the mistakes we see students make when booking.

How to book the PTE test, step by step

  1. Create a Pearson account on the official PTE website (pearsonpte.com). Enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport, including middle names. A mismatch can stop you from sitting the test.
  2. Choose PTE Academic. Pearson offers several tests. For Australian study, work and migration you almost always need PTE Academic. PTE Core is designed for Canadian immigration, so do not book it by mistake.
  3. Pick a test centre in Sydney. The booking tool shows every centre near you. See our guide to PTE test centres in Sydney for what to consider.
  4. Choose a date and time. The booking tool shows every available session. Pick a time of day when you are normally at your sharpest.
  5. Pay and confirm. Pay by card at checkout. You will receive a confirmation email with your appointment details. Keep it.

How much does the PTE test cost in Sydney?

The PTE Academic fee in Australia is around $490 including GST at the time of writing. Pearson sets the price and changes it from time to time, so always check the exact amount at checkout before you pay.

The fee is the same whichever Sydney test centre you choose. What changes your total cost is how many times you sit the test. A second attempt costs the full fee again, which is why it pays to be properly prepared before you book.

How far ahead should you book?

If you need a particular date, for example because a visa deadline or a university offer is coming up, book 2 to 4 weeks ahead. If you are flexible on date and centre, check the booking tool for earlier sessions.

Do not book until your practice scores are consistently at or above your target. Booking first and preparing later is the most common reason students end up paying for a second attempt.

Rescheduling and cancelling: the rules

Pearson’s policy is based on how many full calendar days remain before your test:

When you change your booking What happens
More than 14 full days before You can reschedule free of charge, or cancel for a 100% refund
Between 14 and 7 days before You cannot reschedule. Cancelling gives a 50% refund
7 days or less before No refund if you cancel

Pearson may allow a free reschedule for illness or a family emergency, at its discretion, if you apply through its emergency request form. Always check Pearson’s current policy before you book, as the rules can change.

What to bring on test day

  • Your passport. The name must match your booking exactly.
  • Your confirmation email, in case the centre needs your appointment details.
  • Plenty of time. Arrive early for check in, which includes ID checks, a photo and a palm vein scan.

You cannot take personal items into the test room. Phones, bags and watches go into a locker.

What the test looks like

PTE Academic takes about 2 hours and is completed on a computer with a headset. It has three parts:

  • Speaking and Writing: 76 to 84 minutes
  • Reading: 23 to 30 minutes
  • Listening: 31 to 39 minutes

There are 22 question types in total. You can try every one of them free on our PTE Practice Hub, including full mock tests, before you book.

When do PTE results come out?

Pearson says most test takers receive their results within 2 business days. Some take up to 5 business days. You will get an email when your score report is ready, and you can send it to universities or the Department of Home Affairs from your Pearson account.

Can you take PTE Academic at home?

No. PTE Academic must be taken at an authorised test centre. If you see an at home test advertised, check carefully which test it is and whether your university or visa accepts it.

4 booking mistakes to avoid

  1. Booking before you are ready. If your mock test scores are still below target, a booking date adds pressure without adding skill.
  2. A name that does not match your passport. Fix it before test day, not at the front desk.
  3. Booking the wrong test. PTE Academic and PTE Core are different tests for different countries.
  4. Missing the 14 day window. If you might need to move your date, decide before the 14 day cut off.

Before you book: check you are ready

The cheapest PTE attempt is the one you only sit once. Before you pay the test fee, take a free PTE mock test on PTE Practice Hub, the free practice platform built by our teachers. If your mock scores are already at your target, book. If not, a few weeks of focused preparation will save you a second fee.

Why practise on a platform built by a PTE academy

A practice platform is only as useful as its understanding of how PTE is actually scored. PTE Practice Hub was built by Sydney PTE Academy’s teachers, who have coached PTE students every week since 2015 and see first hand which habits cost marks on test day. Generic practice sites built by software companies, with no teaching behind them, cannot draw on that experience.

  • All 22 question types, scored instantly on the 10 to 90 scale and built on the official PTE scoring criteria
  • 5 full mock tests that follow the real test structure
  • Tips after every answer, written by teachers who see these mistakes in class every week
  • Free, with a direct line to a real teacher when you get stuck
